Water is the moving skeleton of life.

Lichens are among the few organisms that cannot retain water. When a human lacks water, they die within three days. When a lichen lacks water, it switches into a dormant state. A lichen lives, or even grows, only when water touches it directly.

The watercolor series represents the shaping of a lichen’s body precisely through the action of water. A lichen grows where water is present. The watercolor is colored where water has been. Both the lichen and the watercolor are traces of water.

Because water is the moving skeleton of life.
