ULTIMUM REFUGIUM
2011, color & BW, 136 min., 16 mm > video
A film about ending, death, passing away, and the last refuge before adversity.
Ultimum Refugium relates to ending, death, and passing away, and forms a pendant to the previous film The Beginning and the Lion, which deals with beginning. In medical practice, ultimum refugium refers to the last possible intervention to save a life. More generally, it means the last refuge, an ultimate homeland, a possibility before the end – something offering consolation in the face of adversity. That is our situation here. Now.
The film is fundamentally polythematic. It moves between the general and universal idea of the end, human death, planetary destruction, water, Europe, Old Church Slavonic tradition, and small everyday situations. What matters most in the film is openness, both in its final form and in the process of writing and filming. Openness is the gate through which life enters.
